Bay Area Near the Top
According to figures released June 28 by
Americans for the Arts in its first national Creative Industries Study,
the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose metropolitan area ranks third in the
nation in numbers of arts-related businesses, institutions, and
organizations (both for-profit and nonprofit), with a total figure of
21,232. Nationally, the number one metropolitan area is New York/Northern
New Jersey/Long Island, with 54,895. In the number two position is the Los
Angeles/Riverside/Orange County metropolitan area, with 48,862 arts
related businesses.
When ranked in terms of number of arts-related
businesses, institutions, and organizations per capita, the San
Francisco/Oakland/San Jose metropolitan area is second nationally, with
3.016 per thousand people. The top spot goes to Seattle/Tacoma/Bremerton,
which has 3.415 per thousand.
The study included six creative industries:
museum/collections; performing arts; visual/photography; film, radio, TV;
design/publishing; and schools/services. The national total of creative
industry businesses is 548,000, or 4.3 percent of all U.S. businesses,
which employ 2.99 million people (2.2 percent of all employees). The
report notes that ãthe creative industries also provide the essential fuel
that drives the Îinformation economyâ÷the fastest growing segment of the
nationâs economy.ä Robert L. Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the
Arts, said, ãWith the growth of the information age, the arts are now a
fundamental component of the U.S. economy, and one in which every state
and virtually every community has a stake.ä
