Artist's
Statement
I go on material treasure
hunts to salvage yards and 2nd hand shops; to forests and beaches;
to other countries and to my grandmother’s musty forgotten closet in
Lodi. Sometimes things just appear to me when I’m not even trying to
find them. Typically I work with old, used and sometimes decaying matter
of wood, metal or plastic; combining their industrial, manmade quality
with organic items like oyster shells, pine needles, and raffia. The
union of these juxtaposed materials explores the conflict and union of
the mechanistic and the mystic worlds, and my desire to merge my
spiritual and everyday life in a more holistic manner.
The assemblages also convey
my stories, emotions, and Self exploration journeys. Often
an alchemical process occurs as I put together my sculptures - through
burning and weather effects of sun and rain. These methods acknowledge
changes I am making in my life.
My ancestry is an area of
richness for me. I feel by meditating on and honoring their stories
through my art, I am providing healing for my family – past, present,
and future. Some of the sculptures are tributes to my family matriarchy – my grandmother and
my mother.
My work is a form of
meditation. The repetition puts me in another state. I recently
punctured
a mannequin over a hundred times with a paper clip and inserted pine
needles dipped in glue, one by one into each poked hole. It was a
process in patience which I enjoyed. I appreciate the focus and
attention of being in my art. Nothing is more important than being
present in creation.
